Why: If you're finding it tough to remember far enough back to when Australia had a decent variety show on the airwaves - a place for our musicians to perform live to audiences at home/our sketch comedians to put together hilarious skits/interviews with creative and interesting people you may not already know but probably should - well, you're not the only one.
Late last year musician Laura Imbruglia got the bright idea to join forces with other like-minded types to fill the aforementioned variety show void in this country with a web series. Nine months and a whole lot of musicians, visual artists, actors and comedians in front of a camera later, and voila! Amateur Hour TV was born!
Having been lucky enough to attend the media launch at The Gasometer Hotel, we're happy to personally vouch for the fact that the show is genuinely great and interesting, and most importantly, funny - particular highlights of episode one include the Cindy Salmon comedy sketch, a live music performance by Miss Eileen & King Lear, and a cooking show hosted by singer songwriter Laura Jean. But it's ALL GOOD, trust us! Commercial television networks may have abandoned the idea of putting their money toward funding decent variety programming for people with brains and taste, but the internet has opened up a whole new world of entertainment and thank god for that, eh?
The show will be unleashed on online on Tuesday 1 September at 8pm on the dot, after which they'll be releasing the following five episodes on a fortnightly basis, same time same day. Keep an eye on the show's YouTube channel and if you want to encourage more of this kind of creativity and hard work, maybe consider throwing some cash their way - they've got an ongoing GoFundMe campaign to keep money in the coffers so if you like what you see, you know what to do - donate!
