DIOR AND I at MIFF
Words - Melissa Forsyth
Dior and I is a behind the scenes look at the introduction of Raf Simons and his highly anticipated, first haute couture collection as artistic director for the House of Dior.
The former men’s wear designer for Jil Sander, Raf has often been described as a minimalist and associated with contemporary masculine design. Not an obvious choice for a label that is synonymous with elegance, colour and feminine silhouettes.
Trailing Raf and his collaborators from their introduction to the house and first meeting with the ateliers to the fall-winter runway show in 2012. This collection is shown as a true labor of love. Beading and fabric emergencies, missing ateliers and drama over a spray painted jackets are punctuated with flash backs and reading from Christian Dior’s memoirs.
Raf may not have been everyone’s first choice to take over at Dior, but his passion, anxiety, fear over the first collection coupled with his appreciation of the history the Dior House culminates in a runway show actually brought tears to my eyes.
