What have you done so far today?

I'm in Queensland for the day so I have just been wondering around and I went to check out the Queensland art gallery.

What inspires you? Where to start.. Life, people, my surroundings, travel, art and artists both new and old. Honestly I could go on and on I'm inspired constantly throughout the course of the day. The trick is to be curious, to constantly be looking, to be open to new ideas and experiences and the inspiration will come. Also the bitter sod in me finds a endless pool of inspiration in the burning desire to make it as an sucusseful artist, this is my middle finger my fuck you to all those who overlooked me, judged me, and wrote me off. And the end of the day when I'm essasperated and want to turn in for the night I think about that and work that extra hour.

You’ll obviously be attending Lost Children Found – anything you’re keen to check out during Melbourne Music Week? As a kiwi I'm a bit in the dark about Australian/Melbourne music I'd prefer it wasn't this way so maybe I'll try see a gig or two.

Do you listen to music while you work? If so, do you find it informs or affects what you’re creating? Sometimes I do, sometimes I listen to podcasts, sometimes I prefer silence. For me I don't think it makes a difference.

Your portraits and imagery of people seem to capture something wonderfully intimate – what draws you to faces and people? I'm a quiet and fairly reserved soul, I often feel isolated, disconnected  and it's not often I'll make a true connection with somebody. When I paint people I try to capture there essence rather than just likeness, to capture humanity as a whole, it's when I paint I feel truly connected to something larger than myself.

JP-9

What's your creative process like? Do you have a routine you stick to?

It changes all the time. I try to not regiment my time or process in the studio too much as long as I'm working on something.

If you weren't creating art, what would you be doing? Looking for some other way to work for myself. I have this weird need to leave behind some sort of legacy and it's going to be hard to do that working for someone else.

JP-2

A fight to the death: would you rather take on 30 duck-sized horses or one horse-sized duck?

I'm afraid of birds so 30 duck size horses.
